Description

In the summer of 2003, we were in the process of upgrading an overflow spillway at Sidney Coal Company's coal refuse slurry impoundment facility in PikeCounty, Kentucky. The new spillway would need to be constructed directly over coarse coal refuse and provide a safe means of transporting large volumes of water. This process was done twice in the same spot but at different elevations over the course of 3 months. It worked very well and both MSHA and Sidney Coal Company were very pleased.
