Concrete Underground Supply Pumping Ready-Mix

Industrial Services: Bulkheads

Industrial Bulkheads

We at Wright Concrete & Construction, Inc. have performed several of these projects in the past both on the surface and underground. All of these were done due to old mine works running too close to active slurry impoundments. Here is an example of both.

One project was for McCoy Elkhorn Coal Corp. on Johns Creek in Pike County, KY. We drilled horizontal holes around six old drift mouth entries then epoxy resined 2" threaded steel rods deep into the rock face and floor. We then installed #11 epoxy coated rebar on 6" centers and formed a large 10' high x 40' wide in some areas 8' thick block. After pumping these full of concrete (with one of our own large concrete boom pumps), we let them set for several days then put steel plates and nuts on the threaded rods and pulled a stress test on each rod to ensure their bonding to rock around each entry. Each one of these concrete bulks had two 8" HDPE pipes running from behind bulk in old mine through bulk and out slope to daylight at end of hollow fill. This would help to drain any ground water or other material that may need to be drained.

The AEP Bulkhead Project was performed at their Rob Fork Impoundment in Pike County, KY. These bulks were constructed a short distance in from the drift mouth of the old 10-2 mine. We constructed a total of eight bulkheads and one pipe seal at this location. On each there was a 2' trench cut out in the floor creating a sort of key for the wall set, then a form was prepared 14' thick, 20' wide and from 6' to 8' tall. This form was pumped full of 2,000 psi concrete from outside with one of our large line pumps. After fifteen days of setting, we came back and pumped a 10,000 psi non-shrink grout mix with one of our new Schwing mixer pumps through injection tubes we installed around the form before pumping Phase I. These tubes were designed to pressure up the seal to surrounding strata and ensure no leakage would occur.
