In the summer of 2002, we worked closely with MSHA and Massey Energy on a relatively new procedure of injecting grout into old works 450 feet beneath the Long Fork Slurry Impoundment. This procedure earned us the honor of being guest speakers at MSHA's Impoundment Training Seminar for MSHA Inspectors world wide in Beckley, West Virginia during spring of 2003. The project consisted of drilling eight 3" holes down through the slurry impoundment into existing old mine voids that lay under the impoundment. After the holes were drilled and cased, we pumped approximately 1,200 cubic yards of 1000 psi flowable fill mix down through these pipes and into the voids, filling the old works to create an additional roof support to help ensure that no impoundment breakthroughs occurred in these high risk areas.
