Installation of approximately 800' of Rail, Belt, and 1,000 cubic yards of concrete pumped down three shafts approximately 800' each to constructed good solid and smooth ways of travel in an out for equipment and manpower at the Lake Side Mine for Kentucky May Coal Company in Knott County, Kentucky.
This project consisted of a two story slope bottom floor and divided roof floor (intake & return) concrete being pumped down slope 1800 LF then placed and finished. Also a 800 cy bulkhead was constructed around the base of the old material storage cone at the slope bottom with a 4000 psi concrete after which large seals were built in 3 entries running out from the top of the storage area and the area was pumped to pressure resistance (approximately 3000 cy) down a bore hole from the surface with 700 psi cellular concrete.
In June of 2004, we accepted the challenging task of placing approximately 1,200 cubic yars of concrete underground for PinnOak Resources, Oak Grove Mine in Bessemer, Alabama - just south of Birmingham. The job consisted of placing concrete on 4000' of 18° slope, 14 feet wide, in the belt shaft that brings the coal out of the mine. The project was basically two-fold. The company wanted a concrete bottom under the belt so they could wash any coal spillage to a pit at the bottom of the slope and there had to be steps placed in the slope beside the belt for easier access to inspect, repair, and do the washing needed. We decided the best possible method was to modify an already familiar product that we routinely use on the surface. WE contacted our frieds at ArmorForm® and asked if they could build us a form that has 8 inch thick steps 4 feet wide on one side and a 4 inch thick smooth section 10 feet wide on the other - all needed to be constructed into one manageably sized form. After approaching Oak Grove's CEO, engineers, and superintendents with our solution to their problem, there was some skepticism as to whether this application would work. However, after supplying digital video of the test panel and after the other companies solicited wouldn't even consider the project (due to the incredible distance the conrete needed to be pumped and the condition the slope was in) - Oak Grove awarded us the contract and ultimately was vastly impressed with our work and product after completion!
